care skills training

What is the Care Certificate?

The Care Certificate represents the biggest change to workforce development in the social care sector and is the first time that the same standards are being applied across health and social care.

Evidencing competence “in practice” and staff learning “during real work duties” are seen as a higher value outcomes than simply delivering staff training, under the new criteria.

The new standards encapsulated in the care certificate should ensure that the health and social care workers have the required values, behaviours, competences and skills to provide high quality, compassionate care.

The Care Certificate and Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulation and inspection have clearly set out the outcomes that must be achieved.

The knowledge must be learned through relevant training and development activities. There is also a clear requirement to provide evidence that staff have been assessed in the workplace to demonstrate their competence and safety to practice.

The new Care Certificate UK standards are: –

  1. Understand the role : We will expect job descriptions to share with the participants from each employer we work with, however we are aware of the diverse roles in the industry and thus would embed the roles within the training to discuss.
  1. Personal development: Often participants do not realise that care work, in any part of the industry, is not only about learning how to offer personal hygiene or make a sandwich for a service user. It is a mind-set of ensuring what they do is service user centred, it is understanding that caring in a loving relationship with people like partners and parents is totally different to Caring with a professional focus.
  1. Duty of Care: Duty of Care will be embedded in the training until it becomes clear to the participants that in everything they do the safety, well-being, dignity and protection of the service users has to be paramount consideration, however they must never forget their duty of care to themselves.
  1. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion : Although EQ will have a session in the training, the issue will be embedded throughout the programme.
  1. Work in a person centred way: Person Centred practice will be explained and it will be embedded throughout the programme.
  1. Communication : Although Communication will have a session in the  training, the issue will be embedded throughout the programme. We feel this is a particular issue that will need to be addressed considerably as, particularly migrant care workers need to understand speaking English and communication with service users and in the care industry are not the same things.
  1. Privacy and Dignity : Another standard which will have its own session and yet it will be embedded throughout the programme. Dignity is a popular subject with CQC and they will want to see a Dignity Champion in the organisation and information on notice boards for staff to see.
  1. Fluids and Nutrition : A session during the training will share knowledge about the nutritional needs of the service users.
  1. Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability : A session on Mental Health, Mental Health Act, the Assumption of Capacity, DoL, Dementia and LD will be offered.
  1. Safeguarding Adults
  2. Child Protection : Although we will keep Child Protection in the session and ensure participants are aware of their role in Protecting Children, we will concentrate on Safeguarding the vulnerable adults.
  1. Basic Life Support: A session on dealing with Health Emergencies will be part of the programme.
  1. Health and Safety : Health and Safety in Care Environments, Risk Assessment, Areas of Concern, Fire Safety, Utilities and Kitchen Safety, RIDDOR, COSHH will be part of the programme.
  1. Handling information : A session on confidentiality inc. CaldicottPrinciples, report writing, some embedded through safeguarding, communication with other professionals through the medium of writing, computers and other media e.g. Telephone and protecting the information about service users.
  1. Infection prevention and control: A session on Infection Control will be part of the programme.
